In West Des Moines, the city clears more than 900 miles of streets, but sidewalks and driveways are up to property owners. The city's rule is 24 hours after a storm ends, and it specifically includes the stretch of sidewalk that crosses your driveway.
What the City of West Des Moines says about sidewalks
- Clear snow from sidewalks, including where they cross driveways or alleys, within 24 hours after a storm ends. Report an unshoveled walk to Community Compliance at 515-222-3480.
- The city does not plow private driveways. Plows may push snow into your driveway entrance; clearing it is the owner's job.
- Don't push snow from your driveway back into the street.
- Clear snow around your mailbox so the post office can reach it, and make sure the mailbox is sturdy enough for plowed snow.
- Plow order: main roads, then collector streets, then residential streets, then gravel roads, alleys, city sidewalks, trails and lots.
Street parking and plowing
- During a parking ban, parking is prohibited on all city streets and lots. Violators may face a $50 fine or be towed.
- Snow Hotline: 515-273-0766, the yellow alert banner on the city website, or text alerts through the city's eUpdates. A live snowplow map shows cleared streets.
Hiring help in West Des Moines
If you hire a company, make sure the agreement covers the public sidewalk (and, on a corner lot, the side walk and curb ramps), says how soon they'll come after the snow stops, and matches the city's deadline above. Ask what de-icer they use: Iowa State University Extension says rock salt works best above 15°F and that salt buildup can injure turfgrass, trees and shrubs. Our guide to choosing a snow removal company has a full checklist.
Iowa has no state license for snow removal. For lawn treatments, anyone in the business of applying pesticides (including weed and insect control) to other people's property needs an IDALS commercial applicator license; each listing below shows what we could verify.
