What the City of Urbandale says about sidewalks
- Clear sidewalks and crosswalks within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall. Shovel or blow snow into your yard, not the street.
- If a walk isn't cleared, the owner gets a door hanger. If it's still not cleared 24 hours later, the owner may be cited and the city may do the work and assess the cost to the property.
- Don't shovel or blow snow from driveways or sidewalks into or across the street; the city has an ordinance against it.
- Keep garbage and recycling containers out of the street when snow is falling or forecast.
- Mailboxes should be at least 6 inches behind the front of the curb and 48 inches above the street. Report snowplow mailbox damage to Public Works, 515-278-3950.
Street parking and plowing
- When plowing is underway, an emergency parking ban applies to all Urbandale streets until they're cleared curb to curb and it has stopped snowing.
- A snow ordinance ticket costs $35. The city suggests assuming a ban if more than one inch of snow is forecast. Call 515-278-3950 during business hours to check.
Hiring help in Urbandale
If you hire a company, make sure the agreement covers the public sidewalk (and, on a corner lot, the side walk and curb ramps), says how soon they'll come after the snow stops, and matches the city's deadline above. Ask what de-icer they use: Iowa State University Extension says rock salt works best above 15°F and that salt buildup can injure turfgrass, trees and shrubs.
