Ankeny's rule is 24 hours after the snow stops falling, for every sidewalk on or next to your property. When the city declares a snow ordinance, parking is off-limits on all public streets and alleys.
What the City of Ankeny says about sidewalks
- Clear snow from all sidewalks on or adjacent to your property within 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling. Fines may be issued.
- Keep fire hydrants clear, and don't bury them when shoveling or snow blowing.
- Don't let children play in snow piles along the street, which the city calls very dangerous while plows are working.
- Before storms, Public Works applies salt brine or calcium chloride to arterial and major collector streets about 24 hours ahead to keep snow from bonding.
Street parking and plowing
- When a snow ordinance is declared, there's no parking on any public street, alley or on-street parking area until the city officially ends it.
- In The District at Prairie Trail and the Uptown business district, parking is banned from 2 to 6 a.m. during a snow ordinance.
- Vehicles parked on the street during a snow ordinance are ticketed $40 and may be towed. Sign up for the city's text alerts.
Hiring help in Ankeny
If you hire a company, make sure the agreement covers the public sidewalk (and, on a corner lot, the side walk and curb ramps), says how soon they'll come after the snow stops, and matches the city's deadline above. Ask what de-icer they use: Iowa State University Extension says rock salt works best above 15°F and that salt buildup can injure turfgrass, trees and shrubs.
