Cedar Rapids tightened its sidewalk rules in 2021. Owners now have 24 hours after a snow or ice storm to clear the full width of the sidewalk and pedestrian curb ramps.
What the City of Cedar Rapids says about sidewalks
- Following a snow or ice storm, property owners have 24 hours to clear sidewalks of snow and ice.
- Owners must clear the entire width of abutting public sidewalks and pedestrian curb ramps.
- After a report, an inspector may arrive as soon as 48 hours after the storm. A sidewalk out of compliance gets a $35 civil citation, posted on the front door, with a formal appeal process.
- If the city has to clear it, a crew comes the next day; the city's FAQ lists the initial abatement fee as $313, subject to the scope of work.
- The city FAQ describes a pilot volunteer program called Snow Buddies.
Hiring help in Cedar Rapids
If you hire a company, make sure the agreement covers the public sidewalk (and, on a corner lot, the side walk and curb ramps), says how soon they'll come after the snow stops, and matches the city's deadline above. Ask what de-icer they use: Iowa State University Extension says rock salt works best above 15°F and that salt buildup can injure turfgrass, trees and shrubs.
